This time of year, I am all about cozy fall treats.
This cozy apple cake is packed with fall flavor. Although I'm not totally sure I can call this a cake. It's more of a cross between a cake and a crumble! Needless to say, don't expect your cake to rise to a light, fluffy consistency, and don't skimp on the sauce. That's what makes this recipe great!
If you're not going to serve the whole cake at one time, I recommend storing the sauce in a jar and pouring it over each slice individually so your cake/crumble doesn't get soggy.

Ingredients
1 cup granulated white sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 beaten egg
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
I like walnuts!
3 medium apples, peeled, cored, chopped.
For the Sauce:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated white sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 pinch baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
Directions
Core, peel, and chop your apples. You can use whatever kind you have on hand. I prefer Gala or Honey Crisp. Set aside.
Cream sugar, shortening, and egg on high speed in an electric mixer.
Add in salt, nutmeg, baking soda, and flour.
Add nuts and chopped apples. Mix until just blended. Batter will be dense!
Pour batter into a greased 9X13 baking pan. Spread the batter evenly in the pan.
Bake 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
For the Sauce:
Heat brown sugar, sugar, and butter in a small sauce pan. Stir continuously until the mixture JUST starts to bubble.
Turn the heat down and add heavy cream.
Add baking soda and vanilla.
Continue cooking at low heat until desired thickness is reached. Stirring contiuously.
